Starting a personal finance blog in 2021 is great, you don’t need any technical experience at all. I’m here to walk you through it all and you will have your own blog set up in just 15 minutes.

In 2020 I have made thousands of dollars with my blog, which is a big part of my side hustle income. I want everyone to know how great blogging is.

Plus, I will teach you everything I have learned about blogging over the past years.

Sounds great?

Let’s dive in.

Should You Start a Personal Finance Blog?

To explain shortly, a blog is a website that focuses on written content or blog posts. You can start a successful blog on any topic you want!

Blogging is one of the easiest businesses to set up and start, as it’s a great way to make money online. You can be sitting on your laptop on holiday in South America and still make some money (that’s what I did).

The best thing about it that you don’t need a college education, work experience, or anything at all to start a blog.

Mostly, bloggers write from a personal perspective, they share their story to connect with their readers. To be successful as a blogger, people want to connect with you and what you’re doing.

To be successful as a blogger, just one thing is truly important: a passion for whatever it is you’re writing about.

If you’re writing about things that you’re passionate about or things that you’re interested in, this will shine through your posts and you will keep your readers truly interested!

Reasons To Start a Personal Finance Blog

Well, if you’re not sure yet if blogging is for you, here are a few reasons:

  • Make money from home – blogging has very low costs and your blogs can make money months in the future. Who doesn’t like that?
  • Share your story – a blog gives you a voice, to share your story with the world. Lots of people write blog posts to help or inspire people, myself included, and it feels great!
  • Find a great community – you write a blog post, people comment and leave their opinions. It’s a great way to find a community in the field you’re interested in. You can learn from your readers and connect with other bloggers that are sharing the same interests.

The best moment to start a blog was yesterday, the second-best moment to start is now! The internet is growing and growing, which means that your potential audience is growing.

There is no better time to start your blog than right now!

But, how do you start a blog?

Let’s dive in all the different steps!

Step 1: Pick a Personal Finance Blog Niche

Let’s first look at your niche: what kind of personal finance blog do you want to have?

There are a lot of niches you can choose from:

  • Financial freedom
  • Early retirement
  • Paying off debt
  • Making extra income
  • Passive income
  • Investing
  • Side hustles
  • Frugality
  • Minimalism
  • Real estate
  • General personal finance

If it’s difficult for you to pick something in the list, let’s think about:

  • Hobbies & interests – hobbies and other interests that you might have are a good place to start. For example family, minimalism, or making money. Anyone with access to the internet has the potential to read your blog, so even more narrow niches are possible! The sky is the limit!
  • Diverse situations – anyone who has been in a specific situation can start a personal finance blog. For example: reaching financial independence, investing in real estate, or paying off debt.
  • Lifestyle blog – this is a personal blog all about you. What crosses your mind on a daily basis, the things you do or the places you visit. This can be all related to finances.

When picking your niche, you should pick something that you know something about and you like to write about.

Step 2: Choose Your Blog Name

Once you have chosen a blog niche, let’s go to the more technical part (YAY, I love this part!).

Now you can choose your blog name, also called a domain name. Your domain name is the name of your website – like radicalfire.com.

This can be a fun, but also very frustrating task. Many domain names have the .com version already taken.

Tips to find a good domain name:

  1. It should be short (2-3 words)
  2. It should be related to what you want to blog about (niche)
  3. Ideally, it is available in the .com version, BUT a .org or .net will also work!
  4. If your domain name is already taken, you can add small words like ‘the’ or ‘a’, or you can add dashes between words.
  5. Just brainstorm some blog name ideas, write down at least 10 of them and check if they’re available on name.com

When you have found your available domain name, don’t go and buy it immediately. Many hosting platforms let you register it for free.

AND, with the hosting platform that I use you can pick your domain name later!

This means you are going to create your own blog with your own personal domain. Domain like “yourwebsite.wordpress.com” or “yourwebsite.blogger.com” are simply not professional and I would not recommend them. They are free but you have no power over the functionality whatsoever.

Step 3: Select Your Hosting

Now we’ll select the hosting company that will get your blog online.

For bloggers, WordPress is always recommended – WordPress.org not WordPress.com.

Personally I use a WordPress blog hosted by Bluehost. 60% of bloggers are using WordPress to publish their blogs and Bluehost is a very popular hosting platform – they host over 2 MILLION blogs worldwide.

Because it’s what I’m personally using, it is also what I’m recommending to others. This is why we will focus on starting your blog with Bluehost in this guide.

Bluehost is a cheap option and great for beginners. They offer 24/7 support and they can install your website within one click.

Follow the steps below to set up your personal finance blog quickly and easily.

3.2 Which Plan To Choose?

First, it’s important to choose a hosting plan.

The cheapest way is to choose the ‘Basic’ plan. If you’re starting out, it’s all you need!

The screen you will see looks something like this, click the green “select” button and you’re good to go:

I have the Basic plan, and it’s enough for me. It’s extremely affordable.

If you get the basic plan now, and you want to switch later, you can always to a different plan and simply pay the difference.

There is no need to sign up for extra things you don’t need!

That’s all I got, so I would recommend you uncheck all the other extras that Bluehost sells.

Remember: if you sign up using my link, you get your domain name for free if you purchase their hosting plan + free SSL Encryption for higher ranking in Google!

This means that blog hosting through Bluehost will cost you around $59 per year, which is an amazing deal.

3.3 Set up Your Domain Name

Type in your domain name in the left box ‘new domain’ and click ‘next’ to start the registration process.

If the domain name that you’ve been thinking about is not available or you’re not sure what domain name to pick, no worries. You can choose your domain name later.

This means you can take a couple of days to think about your domain name.

Simply choose a free domain later – this popup will appear of you go with your mouse towards the top of the page, like you’re thinking about exiting.

3.4 Create A Bluehost Account

Enter your personal details and make sure you’re using an active email address. You can also connect with Google to simplify things!

3.5 Choose your hosting package

Bluehost enables you to pay 1, 2, 3, or 5 years in advance. Which option you will choose, it is a great deal!

Which one the options is the best deal?

I use the 36-month package because that offers the lowest monthly rate for the upcoming three years. Plus domain privacy!

The thing is that you could go for the other pricing, but you’re having a special deal as a new customer that may not be around after that first period.

The 36-month package is the lowest monthly rate, plus the price is fixed for the upcoming 3 years. No surprises.

Remember, you can cancel anytime!

3.6 Which Package Extra’s To Choose?

I would recommend only keeping the Domain Privacy Protection (first part) checked and skip the rest. That means your personal address, name, and information is not searchable by anyone.

For just $1 per month, I would do that for sure.

In all packages everything you need to get your blog up and running is included, like:

Now you’ll get your totals for a couple of year(s) of hosting.

Besides that, there is a 30-day money back guarantee in case you change your mind.

Yesss you did it, I’m so so proud! 🙂

This is the first and biggest step to starting a blog.

Now let’s continue to optimizing and setting up your blog for success!

Step 4: Get your Blog Online

After you’ve followed steps 1 through 3, that means you have already set up your blog and web hosting.

Here is some more information about hosting platforms that you may want to know:

Free Hosted Platforms

For many new people considering starting a blog, it is very tempting to start on a free blog platform like WordPress.com, Blogger, or Tumlr.

I feel like I need to give you full information on it.

Any of those platforms own your name and they can do whatever they want with your blog. They have their own rules and can put their adds on your blog.

That means they are making money on your blog.

If you are serious about starting a blog, you should stay away from the free blogging platforms.

Are you are interested in making money off your blog, looking more professional, and turning your blog into a business? Then paying for your hosting, and owning your website, is a MUST.

You are the only one getting the benefits. You can run advertisements, sponsored posts, affiliate links for products, and more.

Self-Hosted Platforms

If you’re signing up for a self-hosted platform, that means you have your own domain and you’re fully in charge.

You can decide if you put ads on your platform and you can decide what your website design looks like, meaning that you have a lot more freedom!

When you’re choosing between different self-hosted platforms (regularly Content Management Systems or CMS), the most popular one is WordPress.org.

On WordPress.org you use your own hosting and your own name.

When you use the recommended hosting company, you will just pay a couple of bucks per month for your own little space on the internet. Plus you will get a FREE domain name for the first year.

If you want to make money blogging or simply have your own little corner of the internet, the best way to do this is to own your blog. The monthly subscription will cost you less than your normal coffee order, promise!

When you are a new blogger that is excited to get started, try Bluehost. Bluehost hosts over 2 MILLION websites over the entire world. They have this amazing deal:

  • Free domain name ($15 value)
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • 50% discount on your hosting: $3.95 per month

  • They offer free, simple installation of WordPress
  • They host over 2 million websites and blogs currently
  • 24/7 customer service that I’ve used personally (I had a problem with my website and it was fixed within 5 minutes!)
  • 50% off their regular price, so that you can get started for $3.95 per month
  • They have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied

Bluehost is one of the top hosters in 2019 and you can start your own blog as low as $3.95 per month! If you sign up with my link, you will get your domain for free ($15 value). Plus you get a free SSL encryption, which provides you with a higher ranking on Google.

If you want to try it out, I would recommend using the 12-month hosting plan. It’s affordable and you can test the waters that way. If you want the better deal, I would recommend purchasing the 36-month plan, that’s also what I did. For the 36-month plan, your monthly rate is the lowest!

Bluehost is currently giving 50% discount to the basic plan, with a special price of $3.95 for my readers if you sign up using my link in the red button.

To summarize:

When you buy your domain directly through Bluehost, it makes the process very easy. You get a free domain for the first year when you buy 12 months of Bluehost web hosting. That saves you a good amount of money! The monthly price also decreases when you get 12 months, so double win!

If you want to best bang for your buck, I would recommend purchasing the 36-month plan. That’s the best value for your money over the long run and it’s also the way I’ve started out.

If you sign up for Bluehost, but you have difficulties figuring it out, please know that I’m always available on pretty much all the social media channels or email! You can contact me through [email protected]

4.2 Installing WordPress

The first time you log into your Bluehost account, you can follow the Bluehost setup wizard.

Step 1 – Log in to your Bluehost control panel. This is also called you cPanel account.

Step 2 – Go to the Website section. Click on Install WordPress

Step 3 – Click the Install button

Step 4 – Choose the domain name you want to install WordPress on (needs to be registered first)

Starting a finance blog

In the directory displayed to the left of the domain, you can enter a subfolder or leave it blank. I would recommend leaving it empty – if you want to install your blog on a subfolder, for example www.yourdomain.com/blog/, that’s when you fill out this section.

If you do this, you still need to install WordPress on the main domain, otherwise your home page will be empty.

Step 5 – Check ‘advanced settings’, where you can edit the email address, username, and password.

Step 6 – Read through the licence and service agreements, check the boxes, and click Install Now.

Step 5: Customize your Blog

Logging in

Go to www.yourblog.com/wp-admin (replace yourblog with your domain name). If you don’t know your login name or your password yet, check the email that Bluehost sent you.

Changing your blog design

Now you’ve logged into the WordPress administrator area, great! You can start making changes to your blog and change the design to your liking.

It’s helpful if you think on beforehand what you want your blog to look like:

  • How do you want your header to look like?
  • What color do you like for your blog?

In WordPress, blog layouts are called ‘Themes’. Themes are the design of your blog, you can change your theme by clicking on ‘Appearance’ left on the menu.

You will see several themes already installed on your blog: Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Nineteen, etc. These are basic themes that are well designed and have a minimalist look, they will probably work for anyone. My favorite theme is Cenote, the theme I’m using on my website. If you don’t have a specific design in mind, you can check the Cenote theme and the Twenty Nineteen out and see what you think!

You can install a new theme by going to ‘Appearance’ and click ‘Add New’, highlighted in yellow on the image above.

In order to activate the theme, click Activate. You can see your new blog in action by going over to your blog!

Step 6: Install Free WordPress Plugins

Now you have a domain name, choose a hosting provider, installed WordPress to your website, and selected your theme.

In WordPress, you can use plugins to make things easier. That means you don’t have to code yourself, but you simply install plugins that do things for you.

There are a couple of free plugins that are convenient when starting a personal finance blog:

  1. Yoast SEO – This plugin suggests how well you’re writing your article to rank in Google. The higher you rank in Google, the more people will come to your site.
  2. Akismet – This is a free plugin that will block spammers for spamming your blog with comments (they are many and they don’t give up).
  3. Shortpixel – this plugin makes the size of your pictures smaller so that your website is loading quicker.

7. Write content & promote your blog

You are ready to go!

You have chosen a niche and domain name, got your blog online, set up your theme, and now it’s time to start creating content.

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for!

I mean, it’s super exciting that your blog is all set up now and you can start writing content.

To write great content, you should:

  1. Provide value to your audience – this is by far the most important thing. You want people coming back for more! You can do that by getting your point across in the introduction, build on that in the midsection (deliver on what you promise), and summarize in the conclusion.
  2. Make your content easy to read – that means scannable, visually stimulating (a fancy way to say: put photos in there), and leave enough white space. Don’t scare your readers away with paragraphs that are 10 sentence long.
  3. User experience is key – you can add ads and pop-ups if you want, never too much. Don’t overdo it. You are there to help them!

How To Start Promoting Your Blog

Now you know that the content will make your readers come back for more. BUT it is important for people to actually see you content first.

If you promote your blog and get the right people to read your posts, you are all set.

You need to be aware that every interaction you have with your readers, is promotion. If you engage people with your content, you are doing it right.

There are a couple of quick tips that I want to give you, with regards to promoting your blog:

  • Submit your blog to websites – Submit your blog to Blogger.com, Bloglovin’, Mix, or Pinterest. Lots of people are searching for content on those websites and they will find your blog.
  • Get active on the social – pick some social media platforms that fit your niche. Focus on one or two first, before you move on.
  • Be active on other blogs – it’s a great learning curve to read other blogs. When you comment on them, you will make their readers aware of your website while building a relationship with other bloggers.

8. How To Make Money Blogging

When you start your blog and start putting out content to the world, it is great to see the first readers come to your site.

I can still remember the first comments on my website, as I was so happy people were reading my content and engaging with it.

Only after you have put out some great content and you have built up great relationships within the niche, you can consider monetizing your site and making money.

Ways to make money blogging:

  1. Put ads on your blog – this is the easiest way to make money blogging for many niches. Google Adsense is very popular among bloggers.
  2. Apply for affiliate programs – when someone clicks your link, you can get a commission for their purchase. I would recommend only doing this with the products you use and love. Do you want to learn more? Check out this guide to affiliate marketing.
  3. Write sponsored content – there are many advertisers looking for opportunities to find new clients, this can be done with a sponsored post. They pay you and you write an article on their product or service.
  4. Sell your own products or services – if you are looking to really start a business and not just a side hustle, selling your own products or services is the way to go. You can integrate a store in your blog with plugins like Woocommerce.

With these options, making money with your blog becomes possible and fun!

  4. Hi, in this article you suggest using WordPress.com instead of .org, but all of your advice that follows appears to be applicable to the .org version of WordPress. Can you explain?

    • Hi John, thanks for your concern. WordPress.com is a managed hosting site by WordPress, which offers less functionality and control. WordPress.org is the self-hosted version of WordPress, where you can install custom themes and have 100% control over the website. Let me know if you have any additional questions!
