While browsing the big internet, I saw a fascinating question that got me thinking: “What used to be respected but is now just made fun of?”

Curiosity piqued, I delved deeper to uncover the top-voted responses that shed light on the fascinating transformations of our societal perceptions. I will share the top 10 answers with you. 

1. Television Channels 

The best-voted response is TV channels, specifically, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, and MTV. 

Many people agreed, and one added Food Network to the list. He says it was educational and fun, but now it’s just nonstop competition. They are also sharing more of their experiences and opinions, for example, “TLC now (unofficially) stands for Terrible Life Choices” and “The History Channel should be renamed The Conspiracy Channel.”

2. Staying at a Job

Someone wrote that staying at a job out of loyalty isn’t of this time anymore.

Another acknowledged this and said, “more like companies being loyal to employees, providing a good wage, raises, benefits, pensions, etc. Why should employees stay out of ‘loyalty’ when companies aren’t loyal or acting in their best interests? It’s a JOB.”

3. The Guinness Book of World Records

Peter shared The Guinness Book of World Records and wrote that it was once a “well-established and professional collection of every impressive human feat, [and] now a quick ego boost.” 

Bill Bailey mentioned, “The book of records used to be feats of amazing skill and talent. Now it has records like ‘who can put the most clothes pins on their face’ all you have to do to beat them is have a bigger face.”

4. Facebook

While many people will reflexively deny its initial popularity, Facebook belongs on this list. They explained further that Facebook used exclusivity as its primary marketing tool during its initial launch only for colleges.

Many people agreed that there was a time when Facebook was the best way for college students to interact with other college students online. It sounds insane now, but it was true in its early years.

5. The Educational System

Alec expressed that it is working in the educational system for him. Being a teacher still sounds worthy of respect, but working as one is a joke, in his opinion. “Kids are free to do whatever they want, and you’re barely allowed to punish bad behavior in any way, school politics stop changing anything, parents always blame you, etc.”

People shared the same vision. And according to one, the teachers must pay for a lot of the classroom stuff out of pocket. 

6. Wells Fargo

Somebody stated Wells Fargo. Another shared, “Modern Wells Fargo is not the same as stagecoach driving, Wild West Wells Fargo. Norwest Bank acquired Real Wells Fargo in the late nineties but kept the Wells Fargo name as it had better brand recognition.”

7. Hobbies

For some people, hobbies aren’t what they used to be. One explained they are a hobbyist musician and said that they would never try to make money off their music. They simply enjoy creating it with zero expectations. People expect them to make a business from their hobby, but they refuse. 

A person continued that hustle culture ruined a lot because every time they share their music with people now, it turns into a conversation about monetization or how they’re wasting their time. It’s hard to find like-minded people who want to collaborate without it turning into something big. Hobbies used to be something to do just for the fun of it. Time enjoyed is not time wasted, right?

Another individual explained, “The word “amateur” is derived from the Latin word “amator” meaning “lover.” It’s someone who does what they do for the love of it. Sadly now, people use it as an insult. Keep enjoying your hobbies, and if you don’t want to make money from them, don’t. 

8. The Walking Dead

Someone said they’re pretty sure The Walking Dead went from the number-one show on TV to being on life support after the fourth season. Many folks agreed with this comment. 

9. Landline Telephones

According to one, it is landline phones. They say the house phone was a vital link to the outside world. It’s how you’d talk to friends and family far away, interact with businesses, call for help in an emergency, etc. 

They continued, “But once junk calls were allowed to spiral completely out of control, the phone became a nuisance. As someone I saw a while back said, a Gen Z person would sooner jump on a live grenade than accept an incoming call from an unknown number… and that’s in the context of mobile phones, which don’t get nearly as much spam. Wired phones are almost completely useless today.”

10. Healthcare

A Redditor voiced healthcare. She said she’s been in it for twenty years, and it’s changed so much. She added that it’s just gotten more corporate. 

Many people described their experiences with this, and they agreed on what feels like they have more than enough admins and cut those who are providing patient care. Which should be the number one priority, you would think.
