In movie history, there have been hits and misses. Some folks enjoy a flop as much as a classic. But if you’re not one of them, here’s a list of 12 bad movies to avoid.
1. Cats (2019)
“Cats” is a star-studded musical fantasy film, which is the adaptation of the popular stage musical of the same title. The movie tells the story of Jellicles, a tribe of cats who gather once a year to choose the one cat who will ascend and be reborn to a new life.
The movie became a huge let-down despite its incredible cast, primarily due to the characters’ glitchy visual effects and weird looks. The uncanny look of the cats is unsettling rather than amazing.
2. The Brown Bunny (2003)
“The Brown Bunny” follows the story of Bud Clay, a professional motorcycle racer, who traveled from New Hampshire to California to participate in a race. The movie is quite dragging, littered with flashbacks about his past relationship with a woman named Daisy, making it excruciatingly slow-paced. While the notion of loneliness is founded, you won’t find the scene relatable.
3. Battlefield Earth (2000)
“Battlefield Earth” is a sci-fi movie based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s book with the same title. The movie is set in the 3000 AD post-apocalyptic Earth, where humans are enslaved by the alien race Psychlos. It follows the story of Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, a human who escaped his alien masters and joined a rebellion group. While it seemed interesting, the movie is said to be a bad adaptation of the book.
4. Tiptoes (2002)
“Tiptoes” is a comedy-drama fantasy film that follows a strange love triangle between brothers Steven Bedalia, played by Matthew McConaughey, Rolfe Bedalia, played by Harry Potter’s Gary Oldman, and Steven’s girlfriend Carol, played by Kate Beckinsale. Rolfe has dwarfism, and Carol is having a hard time dealing with the possible implications of this in their future.
First, the film is accused of sensationalizing dwarfism. You will also see Gary Oldman in this weird role of a person with dwarfism made possible through awful special effects and camera angles. The comedy and dramatic scenes also don’t mesh well and seem forced.
5. Things (1989)
“Things” is a low-budget horror movie starring and directed by the same person, Barry J. Gillis. The movie follows two friends, Don and Fred, who go out to the cabin of the woods to visit Doug, Don’s brother. They discovered Doug engaging in dangerous experiments to get his wife pregnant, even using mutant creatures in the process.
This unwatchable disaster-piece has a negative reputation for its cult-ish theme. Once you watch it, you’ll encounter unintentional humor and surreal storytelling. The film will ultimately confuse you about what’s happening in the first place.
6. Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas (2014)
“Saving Christmas” is a holiday movie that follows Kirk Cameron as he helps his brother-in-law, Christian, reignite his Christmas spirit. The two embark on a blow-by-blow account of Christmas traditions and their religious and historical significance.
Technically, the movie aims to creatively showcase how Christmas is still about Jesus Christ rather than the over-commercialized aspect of it. But the clunky plots and forced concepts weren’t helpful. There was little to no creativity in how the movie introduced the different traditions.
7. Dragonball Evolution (2009)
“Dragonball Evolution” is the live-action adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s manga and anime series. The story follows a young warrior, Son Goku, who goes on a quest to collect the mystical dragon balls. Known to have the power to summon the eternal dragon Shenron and grant any wish he desires, he has to collect all seven orbs before the vengeful Lord Piccolo, who plans to ask the dragon for unlimited power to conquer the world.
The movie was considered one of the worst live adaptations in history. If you’re an anime fan, you will notice its major deviation from the source material. Worse, you will cringe at the poor casting and the poorly written cheesy dialogues. The visual effects, especially the awaited fight scenes, were also subpar and disappointing.
8. Llamageddon (2015)
Directed by Howie Dewin, “Llamageddon” is a comedic horror film focusing on a killer llama on the loose. The film is set in a small town celebrating Llama Day, and after an eccentric local performs a forbidden ritual, all the llamas in the festivity turn into bloodthirsty animals. It then becomes a battle for survival for everyone in town.
Considering it’s a low-budget film, you will notice low production values, from the special effects of the llamas to the transformation scenes and unconvincing performances.
9. Highlander II: The Quickening (1991)
“Highlander II: The Quickening” is the second installment of the original “Highlander” movie. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the film stars Christopher Lambert as the immortal hero Connor MacLeod and Sean Connery, who plays his mentor, Ramirez. The movie follows these two characters as they uncover the mystery behind their immortalities and, in the process, stop General Katana and the Shield Corporation in their evil plans.
This dystopian film has been regarded negatively because it deviated from its prequel storyline. While the first movie was considered a genius, this second film was described as subpar and confusing. It had incredible casting, but Lambert and Connery were underutilized in the film.
10. Snakes on a Train (2006)
“Snakes on a Train” is a low-budget mock-buster created to capitalize on the popularity of the blockbuster movie “Snakes on a Plane.”
This B-movie starts with an ancient and cursed Mayan artifact aboard a train. The curse was unleashed inside the train, and deadly snakes appeared everywhere. The passengers inside will then need everything in their arsenals to survive. Besides its lack of originality, the production quality is also horrible, with unrealistic visual effects and subpar dialogues.
11. Bloodsport (1988)
“Bloodsport” is a martial arts action movie loosely based on the life story of Frank Dux, an American martial artist popular in the dangerous underground fighting tournament. Frank Dux, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, learned Kumite, a lethal fighting style, from Senzo Tanaka, his mentor. After Tanaka’s death, Dux entered the underground and deadly Kumite tournament in Hong Kong.
This action-packed movie has incredible fighting scenes but a thin plot you will easily get tired of. The storytelling is also pretty predictable, and you will notice minimal character development in the protagonist.
12. Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
If you’ve watched “How I Met Your Mother,” then you’ve heard of “Manos: The Hands of Fate,” which has been regarded as the worst movie ever by one of the characters in the series. Directed by Harold P. Warren, this horror movie follows a family who got lost on a road trip only to discover a hidden devil-worshiping cult. Chaos ensues as they struggle to escape from the cult’s fearsome master and find their way out.
This movie is considered one of the worst films ever made because of its confusing and dragging storytelling. Add to that the awkward performances and poor production values like shaky camerawork for many scenes and technical deficiencies.
