15 Best Characters from the Harry Potter Series

Are you a fellow Potterhead? Whether youโ€™ve read the books, watched the movies, or both, some characters in the series are so amazing youโ€™d wish they existed in real life.

Here are some of the best characters from the Harry Potter series. Be warned, though: there are spoilers ahead.

1. Severus Snape

Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) starts off as a bully professor, but as the series progresses, more layers of his character are revealed. Snape turns out to be a loyal friend regretting his bad decisions, like joining the Deatheaters to having Lily Potter (Geraldine Somerville), his childhood best friend, killed. He tries to correct his mistake by being Dumbledoreโ€™s spy in Voldemortโ€™s inner circle.

Snapeโ€™s story is a great redemption arc that turns a hated villain into one of the best heroes ever known. His role in Harry Potterโ€™s success against Voldemort is big enough to say Harry would have failed without his help.

2. Sirius Black

Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) is Harry Potterโ€™s only godfather. He appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where heโ€™s described as crazy and dangerous. He escapes from jail when he realizes that Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), the friend who betrayed them, still lives.

Black is one of the sacred 28 pure-blood families who dislike muggles (non-magical people). Yet, defying expectations, he leaves home and forms an unlikely bond with James Potter (Adrian Rawlins), Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), and Peter Pettigrew, becoming known as the Marauders. His devil-may-care attitude frequently gets him into trouble.

3. Ron Weasley

Ronald Billius Weasley (Rupert Grint), one of the Golden Trio, is Harryโ€™s first school friend and belongs to a muggle-loving family despite being a pure-blood. He is a loyal and funny friend who offers a more human approach to being a hero.

While heโ€™s a kind-hearted friend, he can also feel insecure and envious, especially with the attention that Harry receives.

4. Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) is a strange Ravenclaw student who is one year younger than Harry Potter. She stands out with her blonde hair and a dazed look on her face. Sheโ€™s often misunderstood and called โ€œcrazyโ€ because she believes in things people canโ€™t see.

She lives by faith and instinctโ€”the opposite of Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). Luna’s unique personality doesn’t stop her from being strong and defending what she believes in.

5. Harry Potter

Harry James Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is the series’ main character. As an orphan marked by his parents’ sacrifice and the only survivor of Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) attack, he discovers he’s a wizard.

Harry is part of the Golden Trio and one of the founders of Dumbledoreโ€™s Army, a little club teaching defense against the dark arts. The entire franchise revolves around how Harry transforms into one of the strongest wizards alive.

6. Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is a marauder who becomes a professor in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Heโ€™s a half-blood infected with lycanthropy after Fenrir Greyback attacks him, turning him into a werewolf. With his condition known to everyone, he resigns from his teaching position at Hogwarts.

He finds love with Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena) and has a son, Teddy Lupin.

7. Fred and George Weasley

Fred and George Weasley (James and Oliver Phelps) are the comedic relief of the entire series. The twins are major pranksters, who are smart and very sneaky. They built the popular Weasleyโ€™s Wizard Wheezes, a joke shop in Diagon Alley that many Hogwarts students love.

Even with the danger ahead, Fred and George never lose the will to make others laugh.

8. Hermione Granger

Known as the brightest witch of her age, Hermione Granger is a muggle-born (wizard with muggle parents). Sheโ€™s a stickler to the rules and has an incredible mind capable of memorizing anything within a short amount of time. She can analyze complex Arithmancy theories and master charms more easily than others.

Without Hermione, the series would have ended in the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

9. Neville Longbottom

When the series started, Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis) was a pudgy, pale boy. He tends to be forgetful and since he has low self-confidence, heโ€™s often prone to bullying.

Overcoming limitations, he embodies bravery worthy of the Gryffindor house, even leading Dumbledore’s Army. Neville’s character arc is a series standout.

10. Minerva McGonagall

Head of Gryffindor, Professor Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith) acts as a strict but caring mother figure to Harry and his friends. Her stern facade hides a warm heart.

Professor McGonagall is an incredibly powerful animagus (a witch or wizard who transforms into an animal at will) and can turn into a cat.

11. Arthur Weasley

Arthur Weasley (Mark Williams) is the head of the Weasley family. Surprisingly for this pureblooded wizard, he likes to tinker with anything muggle, from phones to cars.

Arthur warmly welcomes Harry as a son, adding to his loving marriage with Molly (Julie Walters). Their bond sets “couple goals” for the wizarding world.

12. Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is the archnemesis of Harry Potter. He comes from two of the Sacred 28 families, Black and Malfoy. His parents have indoctrinated him to feel immense dislike for muggles and muggle-borns, which shows throughout the series. He bullies Hermione and other people he believes are inferior.

At the end of the series, with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Draco redeems himself as a great father to his son Scorpius.

13. Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) is the female villain of the series.

Bellatrix is responsible for Siriusโ€™ death and the mental issues of Nevilleโ€™s parents. Sheโ€™s powerful and extremely loyal to the Dark Lord. She also tortures Hermione, trying to get information from her during the war.

14. Nymphadora Tonks

Wife to Remus, Nymphadora Tonks is a powerful metamorphmagus, a witch who can alter her physical appearance at will. Despite her clumsiness, Tonks excels as an auror (police officer).

15. Bill Weasley

Bill, the eldest of the Weasley siblings, is known as the “coolest” one. He works as a curse-breaker and takes care of cursed items.

Under the Gringotts Wizarding Bank, Bill stays in Egypt after graduating from Hogwarts. He marries Fleur Delacour, the French Triwizard champion from Beauxbatons Academy.
