Petra is actually much more than a site. It is an entire city in the south of Jordan. 

The city was first inhabited around 7000 BC and is believed to have been occupied by the Nabataeans from the 4th century BC up until 106 AD when it became officially part of the Roman Empire.

The archaeological city is very big and can be visited by tourists who purchase a ticket at the site’s entrance. Horses, carriages, and electric cars are available for those who cannot walk long distances or want to see as much of Petra as possible. 

Petra beautifully merges elements of cultural heritage and natural heritage. Visitors will see not only stunning Nabataean monuments, Roman ruins, and Byzantine churches but also beautiful rock formations. 

For example, there is a 1.2-kilometer-long sand-colored gorge that visitors walk through to reach the Treasury. Visitors should also take some time to enjoy and admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. 

Once you are in the archaeological city of Petra, make sure you visit the Treasury (also known as Al-Khazneh), the Ums Tombs, the en-Nejr theatre, and the Qasr al-Bint temple. Take one of the site’s maps before you enter it to find your way through the immense archaeological city. 

We also recommend exploring some of the city’s more remote palaces and temples if you can. Some of the main temples can get very crowded, and you can’t always enter them.
