Music brings color to the world, and songs touch people’s lives in a way you wouldn’t expect. Lines from the songs have inspired so many people, from a simple motivation to get through the day to a calming song to take the stress away.
While many songs are great inspirations, some lyrics sound ridiculous. Here are some song lines you’ve probably heard that make no sense.
1. I’m So Gangster, I’m So Thug
Song: Hey, Soul Sister
Artist/s: Train
Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” is about someone who can’t stop thinking about a woman. The song calls to that woman as a soulmate. The song has this funky beat despite its romantic lyrics. And the line “I’m so gangster, I’m so thug” is so out-of-place in a song with this vibe.
2. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday…
Song: Seven
Artist/s: BTS Jungkook ft. Latto
“Seven” by BTS Jungkook ft. Latto became a viral hit immediately after its release. This single is one of the most streamed music videos on YouTube primarily due to K-pop superstars BTS’ massive fanbase, ARMY.
Besides its supportive fans, the song also has a catchy beat you can dance to. It also has lyrics that are easy to follow since you just have to list down all the days of the week to sing along – “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.”
3. She’s Indecisive, She Can’t Decide
Song: Eenie Meenie
Artist/s: Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber
“Eenie Meenie” is a party song with many bopping and grooving back in 2010. The song has a reggae touch fused with a pop vibe using Bieber’s tones.
While the song’s success was phenomenal, its lyrics are quite overrated. The song may be about an indecisive lover, but the lyrics don’t need to be redundant and say “She’s indecisive, she can’t decide.”
4. Fun Is the One Thing That Money Can’t Buy
Song: She’s Leaving Home
Artist/s: The Beatles
“She’s Leaving Home” is a song with one of the most beautiful musical arrangements the Beatles ever created. It even has a beautiful creation story and vocals matching the entire ensemble.
The only issue you will find in this masterpiece is the line, “Fun is the one thing that money can’t buy.” The Beatles devoted an entire song focused on love as the only thing that money can’t buy. This is inconsistent with that devotion.
5. Father Hen Will Call His Chickens Home
Song: The Man Comes Around
Artist/s: Johnny Cash
The song “The Man Comes Around” is filled with biblical references, specifically from the Book of Revelation. It mentions someone who will come to make a judgment, along with trumpets, pipers, and singing angels.
The use of biblical references makes the song colorful and meaningful, but adding the phrase “father hen will call his chickens home” made it foolish. Hens are female. End of discussion.
6. Christmas Comes This Time Each Year
Song: Little St. Nick
Artist/s: The Beach Boys
Stating the obvious is one of the most annoying and unnecessary things you can hear in songs. “Little St. Nick” has a single line that says just that.
The Beach Boys telling you that “Christmas comes this time each year” is a major “eh” moment. Generally, the song is nostalgic, but this one line is kind of annoying.
7. Uno, Dos, Tres, Catorce
Song: Vertigo
Artist/s: U2
U2’s “Vertigo” countdown goes “uno, dos, tres, catorce.” It sounded funny and many mocked the band for counting wrong. Some say it refers to the album “How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” that the song belongs to, which is the 14th album. Others claim that it has a more biblical reference. Whatever it really means, the wrong countdown sounds silly to anyone who hears it for the first time.
8. You’re a Vegetable
Song: Wanna Be Startin’ Something
Artist/s: Michael Jackson
Part of his smashing album “Thriller,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” is a song about a person starting to spread rumors just to make things interesting. The song has this standard disco feel with a complex harmony and unique musical arrangement. The line in the song, “You’re a vegetable; they still hate you; you’re a vegetable; you’re just a buffet,” is plain weird and seems out of nowhere.
9. Only Time Will Tell if We Stand the Test of Time
Song: Why Can’t This Be Love
Artist/s: Van Halen
The Van Halen song “Why Can’t This Be Love” is one of the main songs of the band. However, it’s the first single of the band where Sammy Hagar became the replacement for lead vocalist David Lee Roth.
The song was a hit and became a part of the US Billboard Hot 100. Despite its success, the line “Only time will tell if we stand the test of time” doesn’t make much sense. Obviously, only time will tell its own test.
10. Conversations With Strangers I Barely Know
Song: Bad Habits
Artist/s: Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran is a musical genius who produced songs that became popular worldwide. “Bad Habits” is one of his masterpieces, telling the story of vices and the negative side of fame. The song is pretty meaningful, but one line doesn’t sound like it’s made by a genius. The line “conversations with a stranger I barely know” sounds comical. People you don’t know is the definition of a stranger.
11. Got So Many Chains They Call Me Chaining Tatum
Song: Pop Style
Artist/s: Drake
Everyone loves good wordplay in everything, even in songs. It’s different when it feels like it’s forced. The line “got so many chains they call me Chaining Tatum” in Drake’s “Pop Style” is incredibly cringey. Channing Tatum is popular, and using his name just to be funny is a clout-chasing move.
